Harold Berman Obituary

Dr. Harold Berman, a native Washingtonian, died June 28th at
Suburban Hospital of respiratory complications. He was 87 years old.
Harold retired in 2014 from the practice of Dermatology after 54 years
of practice in Alexandria. He was an active member of the Alexandria
Medical Society serving as Treasurer and Vice President and an active
member of the DC Dermatological Society serving as President and
Treasurer. Harold was an Associate Professor at Georgetown University
in Dermatology for over 25 years, and for 20 years, he volunteered at the
Alexandria Health Department treating venereal diseases.
Harold attended West Elementary School, McFarland Junior High
and Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. Then he continued onto
Georgetown University, New York University of Medicine and did his
internship at Bellevue Hospital. He was in the Air Force Medical Corps at
Scott Air Force Base in St. Louis, MO and then attended the Mayo Clinic
to become a Dermatologist.
In 1959, Harold returned to his hometown to practice medicine in
Alexandria. His first wife, Joan Feldstein Berman, died very young leaving
him a widower with five children in 1964. He remarried Barbara Alk and
added another child to the large family. Hard work was his joy. He opened
his office 6 days a week and at 6:30 AM on Saturdays patients would be
waiting in the hall for the doors to open. Usually these people were golfers
or railroad workers just off of work.
In his free time, he would travel with the family camping at most of the
National Parks including Canada and Alaska. He did get to Antarctica, the
Galapagos, Japan, Europe.
Together with his wife, Barbara, he funded the Berman Café at the
Jewish Community Center in Washington, D.C. Harold gave generously
of his time and together with his Barbara, contributed to various charities.
He is survived by his present wife, Barbara Alk Berman and his children.
They are Dr. Stephen Berman of Austin Texas; Mitchel Berman and his
wife Sheila of Centreville, Virginia; Claudia Berman and her husband
Daniel Fleishman of Corvallis, Oregon; Dr. Leslie Berman of Corvallis,
Oregon; and Dr. Eve Berman of Maui, Hawaii. In addition. a son,
Geoffrey Dietz, who predeceased them. Harold is also survived by eight
grandchildren.
Dr. Berman will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later
