Dr. Stanley O. Mayer (Age 69) of Chevy Chase, MD died at peace in his home on August 3, 2016 of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Born May 29, 1947 in Seattle, WA, he was the son of Holocaust survivors Edith and Ernest Mayer (both deceased). He was the loving husband of Dr. Jane West, father to Jonathan Mayer (Joan), Dr. Emily Mayer and Marc Stern. Dr. Mayer is also survived by his sister Yvonne Cohen (Steve), nieces Erin August (Eric) and Lauren Hanna (Quinn), nephew Adam Cohen and countless loving friends.
Dr. Mayer graduated from the University of Washington in 1968, where he was an assistant to future Nobel Prizewinner Edwin Gerhard Krebs and member of the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. In 1972 he graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry, where he later served as a clinical assistant professor of periodontics and endodontics until 1980. For over 43 years Dr. Mayer and his beloved staff provided the highest quality of dental care from his Bethesda office. He considered his patients more as friends and family than patients. He was a member, Fellow, and Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, which recognized him with the prestigious Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition award. He was also a Fellow in the Intl. College of Dentists and an active member of the Alpha Omega Intl. Dental Fraternity. For 15 years he was a senior member of the Peer Review Committee of the Southern Maryland Dental Society. He was consistently named one of Washingtonian's top dentists.
Stan was a world traveler with his wife Jane, chocolate aficionado, amateur comedian, casual cyclist, avid cross-word puzzler, volunteer with Chevy Chase at Home, volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, monthly protester at the Sudan Embassy, and DC sports fan. He will be sorely missed by all who were touched by his dry wit and warm heart.
Dr. Mayer was lovingly and expertly treated for over a year by the incredible staff at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, NIH, Suburban Hospital, and Jewish Social Service Agency Hospice. His family will be forever grateful for the care he was given.
A memorial will be held at the chapel at Judean Memorial Gardens on Sunday, August 7 at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Stanley O. Mayer may be directed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum at www.engage.ushmm.org/tribute-giving.html.
