Beverly Lemmon Obituary

Beverly Lemmon, aged 66, died peacefully at home on February 25, 2018 in Boyds, MD after a courageous fight with peritoneal cancer. She is survived by her brothers, Robert (Susan) and Martin (Rochelle) Rabkin, her children, Matthew (Alessandra) and Jessica Lemmon, and her two grandchildren, Lyra and Noah Lemmon.

Born Beverly Sharon Rabkin on November 9, 1951 in Passaic, NJ, to Hyman Rabkin and Fannie Goldberger Rabkin, Beverly graduated from Clifton High School, class of 1969. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, earned an AA degree in 1971 and began her career as a department manager in men's coats at Macy's in New Jersey at the age of 19.

Shortly after marrying the love of her life, Wayne Lemmon, in 1973, they moved to the Washington DC area to develop their careers. For Beverly, this meant key buyer and management positions at major retailers Woodward and Lothrop and Matthew's 1981 birth changed her focus to the joys of motherhood and a passion for child development. After moving to Silver Spring, MD in 1983 where Jessica was born in 1985, Bev launched a licensed child-care business at home named Kid's Playhouse. She and Wayne developed a tight-knit community of neighborhood families where she and Wayne organized gatherings and dinner clubs with many of her neighbors becoming lifelong friends. Devoted as she was to Matt and Jessie, she still made time for other local children, often becoming a surrogate parent, lending support, happy to lend a helping hand or a warm, reassuring hug when needed.

She returned to school in 1993, enrolling at the University of Maryland to pursue a Bachelor's in Behavioral Sciences, graduating in 1997. During this time, she founded the Maryland chapter of "Monday Morning Moms," a specialized child-care placement service that allowed her to be a business owner and still be available to her own children.

In 2000, the Lemmon family relocated to Somers, NY for Wayne's new marketing research position at The Baker Companies. Having sold her Monday Morning Moms business to Susan Agnir and eager for a new challenge, she pursued a Master's degree in social work at NYU. After graduating in 2004, she held a director position at the JCCA (Jewish Child Care Associates), overseeing case management of clinical services for foster care youth and their families.

In 2009, Wayne lost his own sudden battle with cancer. Returning to Maryland to be closer to friends and family in 2012, Bev continued her career in social work with the State of Maryland until her cancer was discovered, curtailing her career. However, a fortuitous opportunity arose and she was able to return to Monday Morning Moms and the special relationship she had with her friend Susan Agnir.

In early 2014, Beverly thrilled to prospect of being a grandparent with the arrival of Lyra, her first grandchild, determined to spend as much quality time as possible visiting Matt's family outside of Los Angeles, despite her health issues and clinical trials that had begun to take control of her life.

Forced to retire in late 2016, she welcomed Jessica and future son-in-law Jason when they relocated to Maryland from Seattle to help care for her as her illness worsened.

Defiant in her valiant battle with a cancer continuing to take its toll, Beverly was determined to meet her newest grandchild, Noah, whom she got to hold happily in her arms at home in mid-January 2018 before entering hospice care at home.

Family will be observing Shiva Wednesday-Friday in the early afternoon at the residence of Jessica Lemmon in Boyds, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribtuions may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance, https://ocrfa.org/
