Herbert Louis Goda passed away on May 17, 2015. He is survived by his daughters Saralee Hillman and Esther Goda and his son Norman Goda (Gwyneth), seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of Lilyan Z. Goda, who passed away in October, 2010. A Washington, DC native, Mr. Goda was born December 4, 1917. He received his BS in aeronautics in 1938, and his MS in aerodynamics in 1941, both from the Catholic University of America, having studied under Michael Max Munk, a pioneer in air foil theory. He served as an officer on the aircraft carrier USS Rendova in World War II with ribbons and battle stars. He was thereafter an aeronautical and aerospace engineer, and an analyst as well, with numerous agencies and companies including the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (the precursor to NASA); the Bureau of Aeronautics in the Department of the Navy, the American Research and Manufacturing Corporation (which he founded); Republic Aviation Corporation, Fairchild Aircraft Corporation, and the Institute for Defense Analysis. He received honors from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; the Air Force Association; the Naval Institute, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He developed over twenty patents and published over 100 research and technical reports.
Graveside funeral service will be held at Judean Memorial Gardens, 16225 Batchellors Forest Road, Olney, Maryland, 10 a.m., on May 19, 2015.
