Samuel R. "Dick" Gillman passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 95 on April, 6, 2015. Born in Brooklyn, NY on November 24, 1919, he moved with his family to the Washington, DC area at age six. He attended Wilson Teacher's College and later graduated from National University (now George Washington University) in 1942 with a degree of bachelor of law and juris doctor.
He served his country with honor during World War II as a lieutenant with the 99th Infantry Division.
During his career Mr. Gillman was known as dean of the title insurance industry in Washington, DC where he mentored numerous young men and women throughout the industry and served in an executive capacity at a number of leading firms. These included Berks Title (President 1963-1965), American Real Title Corporation (President 1965-1967), Columbia Real Estate Title Insurance Company (President 1967-1976), and District Realty Title Insurance Company (President/Chairman of the Board 1976-1986). Following his retirement in 1986, Mr. Gillman served for several years as a consultant to the Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company.
Mr. Gillman was active in the business and social community serving as President of the District of Columbia Land Title Association, President of the Maryland Land Title Association; President of the Greater Washington Executives Association and President of The Kiwanis Club of Washington D.C. He also held professional memberships in The Bar Association of the District of Columbia, Maryland State Bar Association, The American Judicature Society, The Washington Board of Realtors, The Washington Board of Trade, The American Land Title Association, The Mortgage Bankers Association of the District of Columbia and The Home Builders Association of the District of Columbia.
More than any of his significant life's accomplishments, Mr. Gillman was truly happiest to be the cherished husband for more than 55 years of Rita (Klawans) Gillman of Bethesda, MD, proud father to Frank & Joy Gillman of Los Angeles, CA, Mike & Mindy Gillman of Olney, MD, and Ron & Tracy Gillman of Woodcliff Lake, NJ as well as beloved Zaydee to seven wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Gerald Gillman of Silver Spring, MD. His parents Julius & Eva Gillman and brothers Herman and Leonard Gillman preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015, 12:00 noon, at Danzansky-Goldberg Memorial Chapel, 1170 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD. Interment at King David Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving immediately following interment at the Norbeck Country Club. Shiva to be held at 7PM Monday and Tuesday at the late residence. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
