IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alan Robert
Gold
May 12, 1948 – July 26, 2023
Alan passed away on July 26, 2023, in North Bethesda, MD. He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara, loving daughter Laura (Yuval) Weber, son Matt (Edi) from an earlier marriage, granddaughter Gabby, sister Iris Roth (Lawrence King), and a host of loyal friends and patients. Alan was a one in a million guy who was felled by a one in a million disease: Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
He earned his undergraduate degree from The George Washington University, his OD from the New England College of Optometry, and his JD from the George Mason University School of Law. For more than 25 years, Alan owned and operated Malamut Opticians, a multi-office optometry practice in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. From time to time, he also served as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases.
Alan's depth and breadth of knowledge were legendary, as was his ability to recall the most trivial of facts. Other than the manner in which he told his highly embellished stories, Alan did everything with great speed — whether walking around Windermere Circle, providing exceptional eye exams, conducting sought-after Seders, or reading anything and everything on U.S. history and politics.
Our family thanks those of Alan's physicians whose diligence resulted in the diagnosis of this extremely rare disease. In keeping with Alan's request, there will be no formal services or Shiva. If you would like to make a contribution in Alan's memory, please consider donating to the New England College of Optometry or the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation .
