Obituary

Alan Joseph Nuta, 80, of Montgomery Village, Maryland, passed away early in the morning of December 19, 2024.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Janice Nuta, and is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia Rhodes Nuta, his daughter, Brigid Nuta Howe, his grandson, James Dashiell Howe, and his sister, Barbara Jean Eisenberg (Philip).

Alan grew up in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, MD, graduating in 1961 from Northwood High School. When only 17 years old, he volunteered for the US Army, serving from 1961 to 1963, patrolling the snowy woods in Germany to keep the world safe for democracy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1967 and received his JD in 1971 from Georgetown University Law Center. He practiced as an attorney for over 40 years. Although he practiced criminal and family law in his early years, eventually he built a successful practice helping sick people secure Social Security disability benefits, and helping veterans secure their disability benefits. One of his proud accomplishments was his work to ensure that the families of US Marines killed in the Beirut Barracks terror attacks in Lebanon in 1983 received just compensation from the government of Iran.

More important than his professional accomplishments was his love for his family and friends. He celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year surrounded by people who had known him for as many as 78 years. He was a devoted and adoring husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a caring big brother and uncle. He was appreciated by many for his irreverent sense of humor.

Family and close friends are invited to a graveside service on Sunday, December 22, 2024, 1 pm at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg, MD. A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, January 5, 2025, 2pm with details to be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to: Manna Food Center.
