Obituary

On March 26, 2020, Alice Boschan Miller passed away. She was the mother of Susan Fain. Joan Miller and David Miller, and wife of deceased Carl Miller, who last worked for the National Security Agency (NSA). Donations in her memory can be made to HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. Alice was born in Vienna, Austria on January 14,1923. Her father was a lawyer and her mother a duplicate bridge player and member of the 1937 Austrian World Championship women's bridge team. She was Jewish, but like many Western European Jews, was not observant. Her life was upheaved when Hitler came, and her father was imprisoned during Kristallnacht. He contracted a serious contagious disease and was given the opportunity to leave the country if he left his assets to Austria — which he did — and he and Alice's mom escaped to Italy. They first sent Alice on the Kindertransport to England, where she stayed for a year with a Christian family.

Alice's father found a law client in the U.S who would sponsor him. Alice took a ship from England via HIAS and met up with her parents in NYC. From there, they went to Washington, DC. where Alice finished high school and then college at night.

Alice's parents started Fabric Reweaving, invisible weaving for fine garments. They worked with area stores and dry cleaners for clients including presidents of the United States. Alice became the Business Manager after the death of her father.

In 1943 Alice married Herman Stein in Washington, DC. Herman worked for the Occupation Forces, and they were stationed in Vienna after the war. They had a daughter, Susan, while in Vienna and then divorced in 1955. Alice then married Carl Miller, a Maryland-based widower with son David, and together they had Joan. Alice continued to work at Fabric Reweaving, played golf, bowled, played the piano, enjoyed traveling, and loved sweets. She was a Life Master bridge player who indulged her passion for duplicate bridge throughout her life. And she raised three children, who all went to college and then got married and had children of their own.

Alice and Carl sold their Wheaton house and moved into Riderwood, an assisted-living community, in 2001. Carl died of sarcoma on March 6, 2002 and Alice died of a stroke on March 26, 2020. They are survived by Susan, Joan, and David and their spouses and adult children.
