Obituary

Of Washington, DC and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina Born on March 7, 1930, Allen passed away on March 5, 2016 after a brief yet courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Surrounded by his loving family and brimming with dignity and wit, he died peacefully at home. Allen is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years and best friend, Cookie Albert Slan; adored children, Robin Slan Hoffman (Tom), Carol Slan Sheppard (Jim) and David Slan (Arlene); and cherished grandchildren, Pamela Sheppard, Allison Hoffman, Stacey Sheppard, Erica Slan, Aaron Slan, Julia Hoffman, and Jennifer Sheppard, the pride and joy of his life, to whom he will always be known as "Poppie." Son of the late Rubin and Sophie Slan and brother of the late Jeanette Wineburgh, Allen is also survived by his sister, Sylvia Grubman; brother, Melvin Slan (Linda); dear and devoted family friend Dorothy Patterson; and countless other family members and lifelong friends. A native Washingtonian, Allen was a 32nd-degree Mason of Cornerstone Lodge of Maryland and a member of Congregation B'nai Tzedek. Founder of Crest Cleaners and Crestwear Uniform Services, he proudly provided support and services to our men and women in uniform. His business was located on the US Army Base at Fort Belvoir, VA and later expanded to serve other bases and branches of the military before finally opening retail locations. For many years, Allen, Cookie and their family and friends could be found cruising the Chesapeake on their boat, the "Gran' Slan." Allen became an instant friend to all who met him. Those who knew and loved him sang of his warmth and signature sense of humor. He was a lover of all animals, especially his precious Basset Hounds, Melanie and Molly.
