BORN AND RAISED IN WASHINGTON, DC, ALVIN GRADUATED FROM WOODROW WILSON HIGH SCHOOL IN 1943, SERVED IN THE NAVY, THEN JOINED HIS FATHER, ARTHUR, AT NEUMAN'S MENS STORE WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1908 BY GRANDFATHER EMIL NEUMAN. ALVIN MANAGED THE BUSINESS FOR SEVERAL YEARS UNTIL IT CLOSED.
ALVIN WAS A SUPER SALESMAN FOR CARLTON'S INC. AND RALEIGHS UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1989 WHEN HE BECAME A VOLUNTEER AT THE U.S. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM AND AT WASHINGTON HEBREW CONGREGATION.
PRECEDING HIM IN DEATH WERE HIS PARENTS, ARTHUR AND FAY, HIS FIRST WIFE, MARJORIE BITTKER NEUMAN, THEIR DAUGHTER, AMY FOY AND HIS SISTER, DORIS ASCHER. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE OF 59 YEARS, LINDA BALIS NEUMAN AND CHILDREN, BETSY (BRUCE) WILSON, GARY (PAT) NEUMAN, WENDY (PAUL) SIDLOFSKY, AND ANDREA NEUMAN; THREE GRANDCHILDREN, MARJORIE, BRETT, AND BEN; TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN; AND 2 NEPHEWS.
SHIVA WILL BE OBSERVED ON SATURDAY EVENING AT THE VAN NESS ROOM BEGINNING AT 7:00 PM.
THE FAMILY SUGGESTS DONATIONS IN HIS MEMORY TO THE CHARITY OF YOUR CHOICE. PLEASE OMIT FLOWERS.
