Barbara Felicia Schifter, 58, of Mt. Airy, MD, died at Georgetown University Hospital on June 8, 2013. The cause was colon cancer. Barbara was born in Washington, D.C. on July 23, 1954 and grew up in Bethesda, MD. She was a proud graduate of Bannockburn Elementary School (class of 1966), attended Walt Whitman High School, and received her Bachelor's degree from American University. Her Master's degrees in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and in Clinical Social Work from the School of Social Work of the University of Maryland led to a profession which grew out of her strong, innate impulse to help others. For the last 18 years, she had a therapy practice in Mt. Airy.Barbara was a consummate athlete and outdoors person. In recent years, her passions included: tennis, gardening, boating, fishing, jet skiing, hiking, and general fitness. She felt very strongly about making regular blood, platelets and bone marrow donations.Another major focus of her life was upgrading and maintaining a beautiful home for everyone to visit. Barbara was devoted to her extended family and will be greatly missed by her husband, David Lovewell, her sons, Joshua and Adam Lovewell, her stepchildren Amy Lovewell, Eric Lovewell (Shannon) and their children, her parents, Richard and Lilo Schifter, her siblings, Judith Alter, Deborah, Rick, and Karen Schifter, their spouses, Israel Alter, Jennifer Schifter, and Charles Fromm, and their children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Congregation B'nai Tzedek, 10621 South Glen Road, Potomac, MD, at 2 pm on Monday, June 10. Dave will be sitting shiva from Tuesday, June 11 through Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 8pm at his home, 6114B Woodville Rd, Mt Airy, MD.
