Obituary

Barry Ploff, 70, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on the morning of December 6, 2023.  He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Ploff, daughter Jayme Dingler and her husband Chris, son Leigh Ploff and his wife Miri, and his pride and joy - his grandsons Noah and Zachary Ploff.

Barry faced health challenges for many years, which often made life difficult.  However, he found great happiness when he and Ruth moved to Leisure World in 2021.  Barry and Ruth have developed many wonderful friendships and discovered a supportive community in JRLW (Jewish Residents of Leisure World).  They made special memories while enjoying musical events, movies, brunches, parties, and more.  A voracious learner, Barry was especially fond of the classes he was attending.  He was even learning how to speak Yiddush, a nod to the memory of his beloved mother, Esther, who frequently spoke Yiddush around the house when he was growing up.

Those who knew Barry knew that he was a tough cookie.  He could be stubborn and set in his ways, cranky at times, and patience was not his greatest virtue.  But he also had a wonderful sense of humor and could crack jokes with the best of them.  He loved music from the time he was a child and would sing along with a smile on his face to everyone from Frank Sinatra to Carole King to Pink.  He wore his emotions on his sleeve, and could often be seen tearing up at a song that touched his heart, a particularly gripping movie scene, or when talking about how proud he was of his family.

And he was proud – of his wife Ruth for her selfless devotion and partnership over so many decades, of his daughter Jayme for her work in the nonprofit world and the business she is building, of his son Leigh for the phenomenal father and husband he has become, and of his grandsons Noah and Zachary for the incredible young men they are growing into.

Barry will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

The funeral will be held graveside on Sunday, December 10th at 1 pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Clarksburg, MD, followed by Shiva at the home of Leigh and Miri Ploff 12105 Triple Crown Road in Gaithersburg, MD.  Those wishing to contribute to the Shiva can contact Miri at 240-463-3204, or make a donation towards the cost by calling Attmans Deli at 301-299-5770 (ask for catering and let them know the order is under Miri Ploff).
