IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barton Jerome
Gershen
February 11, 1933 – June 23, 2021
On Wednesday, June 23, 2021, our much-loved father, Barton J. Gershen, of Darnestown, MD, passed away of a broken heart which had never healed after the loss of his wife, Enid. Barton was a prominent Montgomery County cardiologist for 50 years before finally retiring. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1933, he spent his early years in Canton, NY and Burlington, VT where he obtained his medical degree from University of VT in 1957. After medical school and a fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital, he served two years as Captain in the USAF as Chief of Cardiology at Travis AFB. Returning to the east coast, Dr. Gershen established a thriving cardiology practice, served as president of Montgomery County Medical Society as well as president of Maryland Medical Society, taught as an adjunct professor of cardiology at GW Medical School and Howard University. One of his most significant contributions to the field of life-saving cardiac care was the development and implementation of the first emergency vehicle equipped with critical cardiac care instrumentation, The Heart Mobile. Dr. Gershen was known widely by his Word Rounds column which he authored for 20 years as editor of Maryland Medicine, and from which two books were published. He was an accomplished photographer, a lifelong learner, passionate about the natural world, especially ornithology. He will be dearly missed by his children, Jill, Cindy (Gershen) Shuman, David, son-in-law Mark Shuman, his beloved grandson, Jake Shuman, and hundreds of former patients across the DC Metro area. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday June 30, at 10 a.m. at Garden of Remembrance in Clarksburg, MD. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Audubon Society or the Museum of Jewish Heritage (NY).
