Native Washingtonian, local business executive, loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Bernie Blum died Saturday, May 31, 2021 of natural causes after a brief illness at Suburban Hospital. He was at peace and surrounded by his loving family.
Bernie was born February 28, 1931. He grew up in the Petworth neighborhood of NW DC and attended Barnard Elementary and McFarland Jr High. He graduated from Roosevelt HS and then GW University with a BA in Business. Bernie's dad, Harry, was a musician from whom Bernie inherited his love of music. Bernie was a lifelong trumpet player and played in the Redskin's band as a teenager.
Bernie served in the US Coast Guard on the Great Lakes. He proudly maintained that during his service, the Canadians didn't attempt even one attack on the US! He then went on to become Executive Vice President for W. Bell & Co., where he worked for 42 years.
Bernie is survived by his wife Carol, his children Gary (Lori Buntrock), Cindy Rampp, & Jeff (Mike Reilly). He was the loving and devoted Grandpa of Andy, Mitch, and Kyle Rampp; Kevin and Michelle Blum; and Della and Eva Reilly Blum.
Bernie enjoyed creating and caring for his beautiful gardens, resulting in the landscape masterpiece enjoyed by all who visit his family home.
Funeral services will be held at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, MD at 12 p.m. on Monday, May 31, 2021. The family will host COVID-19 vaccinated friends and family at the Blum Home immediately following the service and resuming on Tuesday 6/1/21 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Send a Kid to Camp( https://www.ymcadc.org/support-the-y/give/send-a-kid-to-camp ) or the charity of your choice.
