Obituary

Beverly Carlyn Klein, 84, of Chevy Chase, MD. died Aug. 22, 2014. Beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who selflessly sought to make every day special for those around her, Beverly passed away at the Gilchrist Hospice Center in Columbia, MD, after a courageously-fought battle with ALS. Beverly was born May 19, 1930 in Baltimore and moved to Washington, D.C. upon her marriage in 1949 to Joseph S. Klein. She was happily married until her husband's death in 2004, and she spent most of her life living in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Beverly operated the family menswear business with Joseph and earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting after she raised her four children. She then became a CPA and ran a successful accounting practice for many years. In her retirement, Beverly took great joy helping elderly, disabled, and low-income individuals as a volunteer tax preparer and regional manager with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. She was active on the Board of Directors of her Condominium Association. Quick-witted with an enormous heart for charity, Beverly lived with grace, optimism and loyalty. She loved to read and was part of a local book club. She enjoyed theater, opera, and movie-going with her friends. She proved herself a crossword puzzle whiz during countless trips to the Delaware shore with her family. She was a pillar of strength for those fortunate enough to know her, and her compassion and character were admired by her closest relatives, friends, and strangers alike. Beverly was the adored wife of Joseph S. Klein, the daughter of Jacob Friedman and Rose Block Friedman of Baltimore, and the sister of Gordon Friedman and his wife Frieda. She is survived by her children, Michael Klein, Steven Klein, Gary Klein and Linda Klein Congedo; her grandchildren, Daniel Klein (Jennifer Klein), Lauren Klein, Rachel Klein, Jonathan Klein, Jacqueline Baker (Adam Baker), Benjamin Congedo and Noah Congedo; her great-granddaughter, Miranda Klein; her nephew, Ronald Friedman (Barbara Friedman), and her niece, Gail Shaivitz (Allan Shaivitz). Funeral Services will be held for Beverly at 12:30PM on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Judean Chapel, Interment will follow at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, Maryland. Donations in memory of Beverly may be made to the ALS Association or Gilchrist Hospice Center Howard County.
