Obituary

Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Seiden was born in New York, New York in 1910, and subsequently lived a number of years in Yonkers, New York and Seattle, Washington. He had lived in Wheaton, Maryland since 1952.While in his teens Col Seiden enrolled in the Citizens Military Training Camps where he was trained in the infantry at Plattsburgh Barracks, New York, and then more extensively in the horse cavalry by the United States Army Third Cavalry at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry Reserve through the Reserve Officers Training Corps at New York University, University Heights, New York, NY in 1932 when he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science.Col Seiden's life thereafter was pretty much influenced by the inspiration he received from President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the programs initiated by him. He was very active in Democratic politics in Yonkers, NY as president of the Young Men's Democratic Club. Subsequently, in 1935, and again in 1936, he was called to active duty as a U.S. Army Second Lieutenant with the Civilian Conservation Corps which had been established by President Roosevelt. In time he was ordered to Fort Lewis, Washington where he eventually met his wife, Bette, in Seattle, Washington. They were married in Seattle on 26 September 1940.Col Seiden served as a training officer with the U.S. Army Air Corps throughout World War II and, after the war, as Division Chemical Officer of the Second Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, and Port Chemical Officer at Bremerhaven, Occupied Germany. When he returned to inactive status in the United States, he used the G.I. Bill of Rights to obtain his M.A. degree in Russian political science at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, in 1952. This led to his being invited to go to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC.After leaving the Central Intelligence Agency, Col Seiden worked in the Russian area at the Library of Congress, and subsequently with the Office of Aerospace Research, U.S. Air Force, in Washington, DC and Arlington, Virginia, as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, and then as Chief of the Publications Division. While at the Office of Aerospace Research, Col Seiden pursued a course in the evening at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, which led to his receiving his Ph.D. in Russian Area Studies in 1971. His doctorate dissertation, in three volumes, covers the Mongol impact on Russia from the thirteenth century to the present. Col Seiden was quite knowledgeable in Russian, German, French and Spanish.After retiring from both the U.S.Army Reserve and U.S. Government in 1970, Col Seiden, together with his wife, Bette, traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Col Seiden was a member of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America and the Reserve Officers Association of the United States. He is survived by his wife of more than sixty years, Bette Seiden, two sons, Richard and John, daughter in law, and five grandchildren.Jacob Seiden, Ph.D., LT., COL. (Retired), passed away, Tuesday November 3, 2009 at the age of 99. A funeral service with full military honors will be held on January 21, 2010, at 11 am at the Fort Myer Chapel on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.
