David Schwartz, a resident of the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany, NY, passed away peacefully at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center on Monday, January 23rd. David was 92 years old. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington, DC, and moved to the Albany area over fifteen years ago. David joined the United States Marines Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of Staff Sargent while serving in the Pacific Theater. After coming home from the war, he became a small business owner and prided himself on his fairness to his customers and employees. David was a devoted husband for 64 years to Florence until her passing in 2014. He is survived by his sister, Pauline Toporek, and brother, Stanley Schwartz. He was the proud father of Stephen Schwartz of Wheaton, MD, Eric (Ellen) Schwartz of Albany, NY, and Gayle Ann (Michael) Pocalyko of Virginia Beach, VA. His beloved grandchildren are Joshua and Aaron Schwartz, and Carlyn and Graig Pocalyko. An avid fan of jazz music, David was known for his stories about the musicians, recreating concerts from various recordings, and his vast collection of jazz albums. He also was a passionate sports fan and was especially loyal to Washington DC teams. David was a voracious reader of detective novels and newspapers. He loved to tell jokes and funny stories, and was known for his infectious smile and southern gentleman demeanor. David will be interred at King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, VA on Wednesday, January 25th. Shiva will be held at the home of Eric and Ellen Schwartz in Albany, NY from Thursday through Tuesday. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the devoted staff and volunteers at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, especially the Dialysis Unit and the Silver Team.
