IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Deane Lee
Shatz
August 29, 1926 – December 23, 2022
Deane Lee Shatz of St. Louis departed this earthly life on Friday, December 23, 2022 at the age of 96. She was the beloved wife to the late Paul Shatz for 71 years, loving sister to Erna Silberstein, devoted mother to Linda Levenson, Janet Shatz Snyder, Laurie Perl and Robert Shatz, inspirational grandmother to 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Deane had a vision for the future and was ahead of her time. She leaves behind a legacy of philanthropy, political activism, and vision for education, travel and family values.
She dedicated her life and wealth to the underserved, art, education, and Israel. She was a founding partner establishing the Providence House for juvenile delinquents' halfway house in inner city St. Louis. Deane supported the arts as a collector and longtime contributor donating artwork, establishing scholarship programs and creating art funds at the Corcoran Gallery and St. Louis Art Museum. Deane and Paul's charitable foundation sponsors Bezalel, World Union, the Technion, teachers to visit Mount Vernon to educate generations of children about American history, as well as many other organizations. Their contributions continue to make a meaningful impact on future generations.
Deane was very active in the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) where she helped identify and support up and coming democratic candidates for state and national offices. Deane hosted Bill Clinton's first DC fundraiser and many other political fundraisers at her home.
Deane traveled the world with her husband and family long before travel was popular. Curious about different points of view, she welcomed international travelers, diplomats, and foreign exchange students alike into her home.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Deane and Paul formed an exceptional partnership where their union exceeded the sum of their parts. She always sat down to the right of her husband because she said women are always right. Deane dedicated her life to developing a strong family unit among her kids and grandchildren. She was the magnet that drew the family together and established the framework where the extended family continues to value their close connections. Deane will be sorely missed.
