Doris Waveney Best

Doris Waveney Best was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, family member and friend. She passed away on March 10, 2022, after a lengthy battle with illness.

Doris was born in Georgetown, Guyana on December 2, 1938, to Clarence Best and Edna Armstrong. Doris was adopted by and lived with her godparents, Thomas Clarke and Eunice Clarke. She was the sister of the late Shirley, Evelyn, Winston, Randolph, Thomas, and Arthur.

Doris was the mother of Lionel Best and the grandmother of Jadon Best and Thanel Best. She was the aunt of numerous nephews and nieces. She has left many cousins behind in addition to numerous other family members and friends.

Doris attended Bedford Methodist School in Georgetown, Guyana and was the proud graduate of Guyana Nursery Education Program. Doris was an outstanding teacher in both Guyana and the United States for over thirty years. From 1962 to 1976, Doris worked as a teacher along with her sister, Evelyn at Eve's Kindergarten in Georgetown, Guyana. Also, she served as the administrator and teacher at several other schools including Cariwa- Gay Nursing School and Norton Street Nursery School. Indeed, she has devoted her life to the education of young children and was the recipient of several certificates of excellence in teaching.

In 1991, Doris migrated to the United States. She continued to demonstrate her incessant love for teaching young children by working as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland. After retiring from teaching in 1994, Doris in the pursuit of a different calling worked at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington caring for elderly residents.

Doris loved the Lord, Jesus Christ and was an active member of the Bedford Methodist Church, Guyana and the Covenant United Methodist Church, United States. She was baptized at Bedford Methodist church and was involved in many church activities including the Clubland, vacation bible school, children ministry, fund-raising events, and arts and craft workshops. Also, Doris served as a Lieutenant in the Bedford Methodist Boys Brigade and was a chorister in the Bedford Methodist Church choir.

Doris will be fondly remembered for her unparalleled kindness, gratuitous caring attitude, resilient strength, excellent cooking, creative art and craft skills, infectious smile and her unwavering love for God, family, and children.

Relatives and friends will be received at Covenant United Methodist Church, which is located at 20301 Pleasant Ridge Road, Montgomery Village, MD 20886.
