Obituary

On August 15, 2026, Don J. Carren, of Annapolis, Maryland, loving husband of the late Lorraine Carren, devoted father of Rachel and Liz, cherished grandfather of Emily and Ben and great grandfather of 4, passed peacefully at home. He was 101 years old.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Don grew up among a large family. He served in WWII immediately upon his high school graduation. After his discharge from the Army, he continued his education, with an undergraduate degree from Purdue University and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois. It was there he met Lorraine Wallach from New York City. They wed in September of 1950 and had two children, Rachel and Elizabeth. Don and Lorraine were married for 71 years.

Don practiced veterinary medicine in Rockville, MD until the 1980’s when he retired to his waterside home in Annapolis where he became active as a boat surveyor and continued to follow his long-time passion for sailing. He served as Commodore of his sailing club and later organized neighbors to help with the replenishment of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. A lifelong environmentalist, Don also loved to sail, travel, and spend time with family and friends. He maintained his curiosity about the world throughout his life. His sparkling eyes, warm smile, and kind disposition will be much missed.

Don (Donald J) Carren was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was the eldest child of Maxim M. and Florence R. Cohen. Immediate family survivors are daughters Rachel Carren (Mark Young), Elizabeth Carren, grandchildren Emily Young (Daniel Simkin) and Benjamin Young (Jessica Cole) and four wonderful great grandchildren.
