On Sunday, October 30, 2016 of Rockville, MD. Devoted father of Daniel Singer, cherished partner, of Martha Burton, loving cousin of Ellen Barkan (Dick) Zavesky, Morton Barkan, Judy (Michael) Abromowitz, and their children, Eileen Cowin, Robbi Johnston, Donna (Grady) Causey, among others. Also survived by the Jones family: Dale, Kathy, Brian and Matthew; Sharon (Mike) Frazier; Doris (John) Manning and Travis; Jocey (Barrett) Barnett, James Halsted, Lynn and Kendall; and Mary Ward.
Ed was a big guy with a bigger heart, often quiet while always thinking ahead. His tenacity and perseverance were legendary in leadership roles and for things he believed in---giving second chances, giving first chances, born a contrarian who followed his own path but was never lost among the crowd and always stopped to help others along the way. His love and devotion to his only son, Dan, was when he wore his heart on his sleeve.
His professional life was spent in insurance related companies and entrepreneurial endeavors, including IGP, Alsop & Elliott, Hickey-Mitchell, Monumental and his longtime association with Mort Perlroth at ASI in Rockville. Although, never a joiner, he was a lifelong member of the Professional Insurance Marketing Association (PIMA).
Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from Brooklyn Tech, High Point University in N.C. and The University of Tulsa. A lifelong lover of baseball, the day the Dodgers left Brooklyn remained one of the darkest days in his memory. Both of his parents were born in Russia and his father's love of opera and classical music contributed to Ed's love of all types of music. In recent years, he donated thousands of musical CDs to schools nationwide that had been destroyed by tornadoes or had no funds for music departments.
Friends observed that Ed and Martha exhibited a wonderful partnership over more than 33 years together. He let her know he treasured her and she adored him. They made each other laugh, ask questions, expand and enrich their experiences and each becoming more together than they ever thought they could be alone. Both loved to travel to new places and had known couples who waited until they retired only to be overcome by sickness and never able to take those trips. Ed and Martha made a conscious decision not to be that couple regretting roads not traveled. Their first trip to South America was the day after the 1988 Chilean plebiscite ending the rule of General Pinochet and included an impromptu ride with a gold-toothed driver crossing the Andes and encounters with Chilean soldiers along the way. They took many more trips over the years so that there are no regrets for any sights unseen.
Longtime friends, Carol and Steve Clarke, observed that you can tell the character of a person by how they enrich the lives of others through their thoughtfulness and generosity to others. They thought Ed was a unique character, but that he had impeccable character, exhibited through dignity and loyalty shown to friends and family in innumerable ways.
After a brief but determined battle with a very rare biliary duct cancer, he will be greatly missed by those he mentored, loved, supported and cared for in so many wonderful ways.
Memorial services will be held honoring Mr. Singer on Sunday, November 6 at 11 a.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens Chapel, 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd., Olney, MD with inurnment to follow.
