January 23, 1932 – January 8, 2023
Elaine Camhi Melmed, 90, passed away on January 8, 2023. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Elaine was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 23, 1932. A proud product of the New York City public school system, Elaine went on to graduate from City College of New York with a degree in Elementary Education and then received a Master's in Education and a Master's in Administration and Supervision. In her professional life, Elaine was the Director of the Metropolitan Council for Staff Development as well as the Executive Director of the Fund for Education and Human Services, which she founded in 1982. Through these organizations, Elaine was devoted to educational excellence and the training of educators. Elaine lived a life of civic and community engagement; she was an active member of the League of Women Voters, Council of Administrative Women in Education and D.C. Citizens for Better Public Education, holding executive or board positions with each. She also served on the Board of Iona Senior Services. Elaine prided herself on accomplishing tasks that bettered her community. In her personal life, Elaine cultivated a close group of friends, many of whom would gather regularly to play poker and discuss the state of the world at Elaine's home in Upper Northwest Washington, D.C. For Elaine, her home was her sanctuary, and her family and friends her sustenance. Elaine's beloved husband of 68 years, Arthur Sidney Melmed, passed away in 2020. Elaine and Arthur had two children, Peter Melmed (Lisa) of Kensington, Maryland, and Lisa Melmed Cohen (Steven) of Brooklyn, New York. Elaine was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren: Sara Melmed, Mark Melmed, Matthew Melmed and Madeline Cohen, Ethan Cohen and Elias Cohen. Those wishing to honor Elaine's life are encouraged to make contributions to Iona Senior Services or the League of Women Voters of Washington, D.C. A private memorial service will be held at a future date.
