IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elaine Skolnik
Nicholson
June 17, 1925 – January 15, 2021
Elaine Skolnik Nicholson On Friday, January 15, 2021, Elaine Skolnik Nicholson of Olney and Greenbelt, MD passed away. Beloved Wife of the late Alfred Skolnik and the late Victor Nicholson; devoted mother of Barbara Goldman (Mitchell (d)), Rita Skolnik (Stephen Crowley), and Richard Skolnik (Robin); Cherished grandmother of Amy Goldman, Kenneth and Corey Crowley, and Jennifer and Alan Skolnik. Also survived by her Greenbelt News Review family, where she served as President for many years. Perhaps no single Greenbelt figure has been as influential in the News Review's history over more than six decades than Elaine Ruth Skolnik Nicholson. She was 95 years old. Born in Patterson, NJ to Joseph and Mary Cohen, she married Alfred Skolnik in 1947. Al, and later Elaine, were drawn into working on the Greenbelt New Review, a local community paper. Al focused on the "hard news," writing about Greenbelt Homes Inc. and the city council. Elaine volunteered to help write the Our Neighbors column. In 1965 the newspaper, as well as Alfred Skolnik as the newspaper's president, were sued for libel for $2,000,000 by a prominent local developer. The Skolnik's were eventually vindicated in 1970 by the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark unanimous Freedom of the Press decision. In 1974, Al and Elaine were named Outstanding Citizens of Greenbelt by the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival officials. In addition to her work on the newspaper, Elaine served on the city Park and Recreation Advisory Board, was president of the Co-op Nursery School and vice president of the Co-op kindergarten. She was a key figure in the movement to preserve Greenbelt as a planned community during the 1970s and early 1980s when the city endured many development issues. In 1977 Al suddenly died of a heart attack. Elaine took over the presidency of the News Review and took on writing "hard news." Eventually she moved out of Greenbelt to see how the other world lived. She met and married Victor Nicholson in 1985. Elaine remained working on the paper and Vic would drive her to Greenbelt every Tuesday afternoon so she could carry on her activities as news editor. Vic passed away in 2005. As the years went by, Elaine began to suffer from dementia and entered a nursing facility where she died. Elaine was very sociable and loved to dance and sing. Elaine will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Private graveside funeral services were held on January 17th, 2021 at Judean Gardens, Olney. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association. https://www.alz.org. Funeral services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Care, (sagelbloomfield.com)
