July 8, 1952 – June 11, 2023
On June 11, 2023, Eleanor Marsha Sokol (nee Spiegel) peacefully passed away at home in Washington, DC with her husband of 48 years, Louis Sokol. She was 70. She is the daughter of Arthur and Florence Spiegel both of blessed memory of New York City. She is survived by her sister, Carol Spiegel of New York; and her son, Jacob Sokol of Washington, DC and his wife Rachel. She is the loving grandmother of two grandchildren, Max and Ezra Sokol. Eleanor attended Franklin K. Lane High School and Queens College, CUNY in New York City.
Her professional life was as a computer programmer analyst, where she worked with distinction for New York Life Insurance, American Express, Holiday Inns, chemical companies and S&B Engineers and Constructors in New York City, Phoenix, Memphis and Houston. Eleanor won many professional awards including the first SABER award from S&B granted to a non-engineer.
Eleanor was self-taught in Hebrew and chanted Torah for Congregation Brith Shalom in Bellaire, Texas. Eleanor held many positions and was President of the CBS Sisterhood followed by President of the Intracontinental Region for Women's League of Conservative Judaism. After that role she was a Vice President for the national WLCJ organization. Eleanor was truly an Eshet Chayil, a Woman of Valor.
Eleanor was widely known for her amazing grace and dignity while affected by Crohn's Disease, Myasthenia Gravis, kidney failure and other maladies over the last five years. She always had a positive demeanor and was a favorite of her medical team led by Dr. Jean Beaton. Her home health caregiver over the last year was Monique Thompson with Senior Helpers who provided friendship and professional care for her.
Contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation ( kidney.org ) and to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America ( myasthenia.org ). Burial was held at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ next to her beloved mother.
