Oberlander
July 8, 1930 – December 25, 2023
George Hans Felix Oberlander died in Kensington, MD peacefully in his sleep while holding his loving wife Suzanne's hand as he had for 45 years, on December 25, 2023. He had been surrounded by the love and devotion of family and friends during his last days in hospice care.
Born in Vienna, Austria on July 8, 1930 to Frederick and Margaret Oberlander, the family fled Austria in 1938 and immigrated to New York City in 1940. George graduated from George Washington High School, New York University, and Columbia University with a Master's Degree in Urban Planning. He became the youngest Director of Planning for Newark, NJ and then moved to Washington, DC in 1965 to become the Associate Executive Director for the National Capital Planning Commission responsible for planning the Federal land, monuments, and memorials for the Nation's Capital - a job he loved for 31 years. He served in the US Army as a 2nd Lt. He consulted on planning issues and ideas for the National Mall Coalition. He was a long time volunteer for The Children's Inn at NIH. In 1977 he met and married the love of his life, Suzanne M. Oberlander. He is survived by the joys in his life, son Michael Oberlander (Kimberly Kay), daughter Sylvie Haller (Tom Haller) and grandsons Nicholas Haller and Aidan Oberlander. Also survived by nieces Judy Oberlander (Mark Wexler), Wendy Oberlander, and nephew Timothy Oberlander (Julie Martz), along with great nieces and nephews and a great-great niece. He was pre-deceased by his mother, father, and brother Peter.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, December 31 at 10 a.m. at Parklawn Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at Modena Reserve, Kensington. Shiva will be held Monday, January 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Modena.
