Gustave William Zoref, "Gus", was born January 30, 1922 in Vienna, Austria. He came through Ellis Island when he was 19 months old and lived in New York City with his parents and twin older sisters, Lil and Charlotte. His youngest sister Marion was born while they were living in New York. The family moved to Washington, DC where Gus went to Wilson High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 where he was the yeoman on the USS Capella, served in the Atlantic, and was honorably discharged. He then worked for the New York Herald Tribune as a reporter based in Washington, DC. On September 4, 1949 he married Kathryn Forst. For most of his life, Gus worked in the furniture business. He was always a sailor at heart and his boat, the Kaleste, brought him much joy. He is survived by his wife Kathie of 66 years and his two daughters, Leslie Zoref and Stephanie Rake, his son-in-law John Rake, as well by his sister Marion and her husband Wilson; four nephews and their wives, children, and grandchildren; two granddaughters; and, four great grandchildren.
