Obituary

Henry Greenbaum died on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family in Rockville, MD. He was born Chuna Grynbaum on April 1, 1928 in Starachowice, Poland. He was an inspirational speaker and advocate of Holocaust awareness, who traveled to speak about his Holocaust experience. Henry served as an inspiration and hero to all who met him. Henry was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Shirley. He is survived by his four children; Norman Greenbaum (Nadine), Bernard Greenbaum (Jacqueline), Stanley Greenbaum (Susan) and Gayle Prokopchak (David). He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Henry survived the slave labor camps, Auschwitz-Buna Monowitz, and Flossenburg before being liberated on April 25, 1945 at Neunberg Vorm Wald on a death march by the US Army 11th Armored Division. He owned Windsor Valet at 4938 Wisconsin Avenue for over 40 years. Henry spoke at major universities and military bases throughout the country. He impacted thousands of students and teachers alike and educated them on teaching tolerance and perseverance on behalf of the United States Holocaust Museum. He was awarded the Ellie Wiesel Award in 2018, an honor in recognition of his resilience, courage, and commitment to Holocaust memory and education. Henry was able to travel back with his three sons to his hometown in Poland; and back to the Flossenburg Concentration Camp to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of his liberation. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 26, 10:30 am at B'Nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, MD. Interment will follow at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, MD. Family will observe Shiva Saturday through Monday at the home of Dr. Bernie Greenbaum with minyan services at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, www.ushmm.org. Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldberg Funeral Care.
