Obituary

Ira M. Goldberg, 86, died on Sunday, June 26, 2022, in hospice care.

Ira was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Ellen Goldberg, the great love of his life.

Ira was born February 27, 1936, son of Dorothy Blechman Goldberg and Harry Goldberg. Ira was raised by his mother in Coatesville, PA.

Ira leaves behind his beloved daughters, Sarah Goldberg and Rachel Goldberg, and sons-in-law Doug Lepro and Paul Glenn. He is also survived by his adored grandchildren, William, Fiona, and Cordelia. They were his greatest joy.

Ira is further survived by his half-siblings, Eleanor Shumaker, Oscar Gilbert, and Ed Gilbert. Ira grew up with many cherished first cousins, too numerous to list.

Ira was always an exceptional student. In his his senior year of high school, Ira won the Lukens Steel Science Scholarship for Engineering to attend the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics (not engineering but he got Lukens to pay for it, nonetheless)

In 1964 Ira returned to Penn, this time in the law school, where he was a stellar student and editor of the law review. It was there that he met Pamela Procuniar, the love of his life. Pamela was exceptional as well, one of only eight women in their graduating class in 1967.

He and Pam married in 1967, and Ira went on to clerk for Judge James A. Browning of the 9th Circuit of Court of Appeals.

Ira was many things in his life: constitutional law school professor, attorney, math teacher, computer researcher (in the late 1950s), professional photographer, pianist. But his most important job, his best job, was as a husband and father, and most of all, grandfather.

A memorial celebrating Ira's life will be held at a later date. If you wish to honor Ira's memory, please make donations to Planned Parenthood or to your favorite civil rights organization.
