Obituary

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, Janet Litwin Herman, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister passed away in Bethesda, MD.  She is survived by her brother Allen Litwin, her children Carolyn and Nathanael Herman (Jodi) and her grandchildren, Olivia, Eli, and Sam. Born in 1938 in Cincinnati, OH, Janet graduated from Walnut Hills High School, received her English degree from the University of Cincinnati, and a M.A. in English from UCLA.

As a high school English teach for over 20 years at Oakland Mills High Schools in Columbia, MD, Janet enjoyed sharing her love of the written word with her students, and inspiring them to embrace the power of language. Moving into Columbia, MD at its inception and living there for over 50 years, Janet was a pioneer of Columbia and its mission of inclusiveness and innovation. As part of that innovation, Janet, along with her husband David, helped launch the Columbia Jewish Congregation.

Janet was a sharp wit and loved knowledge. She was an avid reader, reading 2-3 books a week, particularly loving historical fiction. She read the newspaper cover to cover every day, diligently working to solve every crossword puzzle. She loved movies, musicals, and ballet. But, most of all, Janet loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, cherishing every moment with them and being involved in their lives.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, 11 a.m. at Temple Emanuel, 10101 Connecticut Ave, Kensington, MD with private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Arc of Howard County ( archoward.org )
