Obituary

Joel Ira Verter, 79, passed away on Friday, August 13,2021. Joel was born on June 14,1942 in Brooklyn, NY to Harry and Harriet Verter. He attended City College in New York. In 1963, he met his wife, Judy (Litwin). ,and they married in 1966. Joel also attended the University of Massachusetts, where he got his Master's Degree in Statistics and the University of North Carolina, where he got his Doctorate in Biostatistics and became an avid Tarheel basketball fan. Joel served in the Public Health Service for 25 years and earned the rank of Captain. He served at the National Institutes of Health designing clinical trials for the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute until he retired from the Public Health Service. Joel then went on to design clinical trials at Henry Ford Hospital, George Washington University and Statistics Collaborative. Joel retired from working in 2014 to spend more time with his family. He was an incredible source of love and support to all around him. His greatest joy was spending time with his five grandchildren. On Aug 7, 2021 Joel celebrated 55 years of love and devotion with his beloved wife, Judy. In addition to Judy, Joel is survived by his daughters, Hillary Riebman and Kristin Ikenson, his 5 grandchildren, Justin and Talia Riebman, and Samuel, Hayden and Abigail Ikenson, his sisters, Arlene Simms (Stephen) and Rose Greenbaum (Charles) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
