IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Gerald
Yassin
April 18, 1935 – August 28, 2022
On Sunday, August 28, 2022, John Gerald Yassin passed away at his home in Potomac, Maryland, with his son, Ron Barrett (Elisabeth) at his side. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michelle and Laura Barrett, and Steven, Jenna, and Carly Albright, as well as a host of friends and relatives, including his brother Robert Yassin and sister Marjorie Furash. He was predeceased by his wife, Jacquelyn Deane Yassin, and his daughter, Stephanie Blyth Albright (husband Bill).
He was born in Everett, Massachusetts on April 18, 1935, the oldest son of Florence G., and Harold B. Yassin. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1956, and from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1960.
He married Jacquelyn Deane Kalan on June 5, 1960. Their marriage lasted 56 years until her passing in 2016. They moved to Potomac, Maryland in 1975, which at that time was in the country, to raise their family. They enjoyed spending time together, caring for their horses, creating involved gardens and undertaking landscaping projects.
He took great pride in being a grandfather and had a unique relationship with each of his grandchildren. He was not shy about passing on his wisdom and inspired them to pursue higher knowledge.
Following an internship in New Jersey, he started a residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1961 in OB-GYN. Deciding that specialty was not for him, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was assigned to Patrick Air Force Base in February 1962, which was the support base for Cape Canaveral. John Glenn had just completed his first orbital mission. He was fortunate to be there with the first group of Astronauts, the Mercury Seven, and practiced general and flight medicine.
He was awarded wings as a flight surgeon in 1963 and spent over twenty years in the service, ten plus on active duty and the rest as a reservist. He rose to the rank of Colonel and was a military consultant to the Surgeon General. He was the Chief of the Eye Department at Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center, his last active duty assignment.
After deciding to pursue Opthalmology, he did his residency at Tulane and then at Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, completing this in 1967. After leaving active duty, in 1970 he took fellowship training in Oculoplastic Surgery at The Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at the Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital in New York City. He started private practice in Northern Virginia on January 2nd, 1971, and practiced continuously until retirement in 2018 - a total of forty seven years. He was the first fellowship trained eye plastic surgeon in Northern Virginia.
He was dedicated to teaching and spent at least one day per week doing that for over thirty years. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Georgetown University where he was awarded the Vicennial Medal, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and the Ocupolastic & Orbital Surgery Service of the Wills Eye Hospital. He was a consultant at the Veterans Hospital in Washington, District of Columbia. However, he was most proud of being the longest serving national consultant to the Walter Reed Eye Department from 1976 until retirement, first in Oculoplastic Surgery and then in the fitting of contact lenses especially in those patients in which the lenses provide the best, and sometimes only method to provide satisfactory vision. He also earned an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In 2005 he joined SeeClearly Vision of Arlington and had offices at the Virginia Hospital Center with that group until retirement.
A service will be scheduled at a later date with interment at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that donations in John's memory be made to The Parkinson's Foundation ( parkinson.org ) or Arthritis Foundation ( arthritis.org ) in memory of Jacquelyn.
