On September 3rd, 2023, Lawrence "Larry" Jay Sherman, 81, of Rockville MD passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, loved ones and friends.
Larry was born in 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the oldest of 3 siblings of Ben Emanuel Sherman and Leonora Weill Sherman. Larry grew up in Carnegie, Pennsylvania and graduated University of Pittsburgh in 1963. He received his Juris Doctor from University of Michigan in 1966 with special recognition in labor law. He was subsequently licensed to practice law in D.C., California and Maryland.
Prior to entering private practice, Larry worked for the National Labor Relations Board and served as the founding director of the Migrant Legal Action Program. He was very proud of his work protecting the civil and employment rights of seasonal farm workers early in his career.
Larry was the Principal Attorney and Owner of the Law Offices of Lawrence J. Sherman from 2007 until his retirement in Washington, D.C. Prior to this position he served as a partner or at counsel in a number of firms with attorneys who have also remained his life-long friends and business associates.
Outside of his law practice, he served as an adjunct professor at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies and a member of the labor and employment law section and ligation section of the D.C. Bar.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed hobbies including photography, tennis, watching football, travelling, reading the newspaper and novels and watching public television WETA.
He is survived by his daughters, son in law and grandson. He is also survived by his brother and sister. In addition he is survived by his ex-wife and cherished companion Sonia Nicholson.
