Lawrence W. White MD (Laurie), 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 3, surrounded by family. Laurie grew up in Toronto, Canada, the son of Albert White and Frances Freilich. He graduated from the University of Toronto School of Medicine and performed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Toronto Western Hospital. He moved to Cleveland in 1963, where he practiced medicine and pursued clinical research as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. In Cleveland, he became politically active, including advocating for fair housing, becoming involved with Americans for Democratic Action, and co-founding the New Democratic Coalition.
Laurie practiced internal medicine for many years and was both loved and respected by his patients. He had a passion for art collection, travel and was an avid skier. He had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and new experiences, which led him to pursue interests as varied as bioethics, creative writing, improv, and piloting. His life path took him from Cleveland to Northern California and finally to Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Surviving him are his first wife and forever friend Myra G. White, his beloved children, Daniel S. White (Audrey), Renee D. White (Brad), Kenneth A. White (Elizabeth) and Reuven G. White, and his five grandchildren, Kevin White, Julianna White, Noah Smith, Leah Smith and Ari White.
Burial will take place Friday June 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park (14321 Comus Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871). Following the burial, we will gather for a memorial service and time of remembrance at 1:00 p.m. at Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Home (170 Rollins Avenue, Rockville, MD 20852).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics.
