Obituary

Leita (Axelroad) Beck died at her home Monday, September 20, 2010 at the age of 99. She was born August 6, 1911 in Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and studied Interior Design at Pratt Institute. She moved to Washington, DC during World War II, where she met and married Samuel Beck, who co-owned argyle Pharmacy in Mount Pleasant, DC. They later moved to Montgomery County. Mrs. Beck was involved in many of the human rights causes of the forties, fifties, and sixties in the city including protesting the hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee, marching for civil and human rights, and picketing businesses that discriminated against minorities. Her working career included employment at the United Planning Organization under James Gibson and interviewing members of the Congress and corporate and Federal government executives for the Harris Group. She is survived by her two daughters, Carla Koller (Donald), of Rockville and Jane Sherman (Kim), of Columbia; four grandchildren, David Koller (Deborah), Adam Sherman, Daniel Sherman (Sophie) and Danielle Davidoff (Doug); and seven great-grandchildren, Drew and Dylan Davidoff, Sam, Elijah and Asher Koller and Mimi and Evie Sherman.
