Obituary

Lewis Aaron Chabot, 61, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away very suddenly and most unexpectedly, from a brief illness, on March 2nd.  He was born in 1961 in Washington, D.C. to Judge Herbert L. Chabot and Aleen Kerwin Chabot.

Lewis is preceded in death by his father, Herbert, and his feline companions, Cricket, Sippy, and Sammy.   He is survived by his mother, Aleen; brother Elliot and wife Chris of Aspen Hill, Maryland; identical twin brother Donald and wife Nicki of Frederick, Maryland; sister Nancy Jo and husband Parker of Hopkinton, New Hampshire; nephews Jules and Niko of Frederick, Maryland; and niece Sophie of Columbus, Ohio.

A 1979 graduate of Robert E. Peary High School in Aspen Hill, Lewis attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in accounting in 1984.

His first accounting job was with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  He went on to get his CPA certification and worked for several Maryland and DC-based accounting firms, including RSM, Grossberg Company LLP, and Calibre CPA Group, PLLC.  He was a Tax Manager and specialized in partnership, individual, trust and UBIT returns, including corporate, sports and union tax filings.

Lewis was a soft-spoken, easy-going, genuinely nice guy.  He had a great sense of humor, often would make funny comments and puns, and used his sense of humor to diffuse tension in a group setting.  He loved cats and found them great, engaging companions.

When the call went out, Lewis willingly pitched in to help his family and his office colleagues.  He traveled to China with his sister, to assist her as she collected her adoptive daughter, and became the person there who would help out generally, and would hold babies for anyone in their group. In their early years, he spent many weekends with his twin nephews (and their parents), pitching in where he was needed.  He helped out his office colleagues with their own tax returns, and always participated in his office's celebrations.

Although a nice guy, Lewis was very competitive and loved to win at all sorts of games.  He had an affinity for playing cards, and often was the winner in family card games of Pounce and Casino.  In the Casino card games, he was known for some smack talk, but mostly for his ability to come from way behind and win, time after time.

In his 20s, Lewis was a runner and completed several full marathons, including the Marine Corps and DC marathons.  He and his brother, Elliot, ran a fun half-ultra-marathon in Davos, Switzerland (with snow and ice in August).  An Achilles heel injury ended his running days.  Lewis also enjoyed playing frisbee, as well as swimming and bicycling.  He liked playing basketball, and was most successful at basketball in sports bars, winning 2 jukebox CD players.

Lewis loved the local professional and college sports teams so much that he often rooted for 2 teams in each sport.  His baseball teams were the Baltimore Orioles and the Atlanta Braves; the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders were his football teams; and for basketball, he rooted for the Washington Wizards and the Milwaukee Bucks.

In addition to sports, Lewis watched westerns, medical and criminal investigative dramas, professional wrestling and movies.  He read horror books and mysteries, as well as historical novels, some fantasies, and enjoyed darker fiction, dealing with dysfunctional families and the sinister side of human nature.  His favorite authors were Stephen King and John Grisham.

He liked the ocean and loved to walk on the beach, to lie on it and read books, and especially to play beach boccie.  He enjoyed walking on quiet streets and observing the wildlife.

He served as an Elections Chief Judge in Montgomery County, as treasurer for Friends of the Aspen Hill Library, and treasurer of Services for the Visually Impaired, where he also volunteered to prepare tax returns and to read to the blind.  Lewis also donated blood to the American Red Cross.

His funeral is scheduled for Sunday, March 12, at 10 a.m., at Judean Chapel with interment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens, 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd, Olney, MD 20832.

Donations in Lewis' memory are encouraged to the Nature Conservatory , American Red Cross (you also can give blood), or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of America
