The family of Lewis Howard Cohen is deeply saddened by his sudden passing on Friday, December 17, 2021.
He is survived by his wife Linda of 50 years, daughter Jill (Jason Martin), granddaughters Sydney and Olivia Martin, and daughter Beth (Jay Gelfman), grandchildren Zachary and Lindsay Gelfman; brother Robert (Rhoda) Cohen, and many cherished family and friends.
Lew was born on December 6, 1944, in The Bronx, NY. After graduating from Bronx High School of Science in June 1962, he worked in NYC for Metropolitan Life, attending college at night. Lew then went on to serve in the United States Air Force, being honorably discharged in May of 1969. He moved down to Maryland, where he finished college at the University of Maryland, getting his BS degree in December 1970, and passing the CPA exam in Nov. 1971.
Lew's work career included many wonderful years at Kenneth Leventhal & Company in Washington D.C, William L. Berry Company in Chevy Chase MD. and Kastle Systems in Roslyn, VA.
After retiring in 2000, Lew became active in many different organizations. As a member of Temple Beth Ami for almost 40 years, 2 of his happiest were when he served as President of Beth Ami's Brotherhood. He was actively involved with the Habonim Investment Group, serving on its Executive Board for 7 years. Lew also volunteered every Wednesday morning at the USO at Walter Reed.
Another organization closest to his heart was the Men's Club of Bender JCC in Rockville MD, where he served as its Treasurer and was part of the "Seal Team".
He was actively involved in many organizations whose mission it is to fight Anti-Semitism, including AIPAC, EMET and CUFI.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 19, 2021, 1 PM at Temple Beth Ami, 14330 Travilah Rd, Rockville, MD 20850; with interment to follow at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lew's memory may be made to Temple Beth Ami, Bender JCC of Greater Washington, or the charity of your choice.
