MARCELLA CHESLOW HOLZMANApril 3, 1920 to March 5, 2011Our mom was born in Zurich, Switzerland. Her family emigrated to the US when she was an infant and settled on Chicago's North side where she lived most of her life.Mom's family was always central in her life: brother Herman, sister Jane and parents Bernard and Rachel. Before marrying Sidney, a dentist, and raising her family, mom was popular, vivacious and beautiful. Caring for her children Steve and Nancy and her husband Sidney later became her driving force, leaving little time for friends outside the family. When her grandchildren: Sarah, Jessica, David and Emily were born, they also became a big part of her life.Mom moved to Los Angeles in the 70's to look after her dad and when he passed, she came to Silver Spring to be near Nancy and her family.Popular music, especially of 30's - 60's was a passion and she would often play and sing Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Connie Frances and others at home, even playing their songs on piano, for which she had no formal training. A related hobby later was recording her favorite radio and TV artists on tape. She was also a great M*A*S*H fan and knew every episode well. In her final years when her memory was fading, she could still sing all the songs of her youth by heart.Sadly, Alzheimer's disease robbed her and all of us who loved her of the last few years of her life, which she spent at Brooke-Grove Home. We will all miss her terribly.Arrangements under the direction of Edward Sagel Funeral Direction, Inc., Rockville, MD.
