Obituary

Michael Robert Dalton, born in New York City on October 28, 1943, passed away peacefully at home  in Potomac, Maryland on Saturday, February 18, 2023. He is remembered by loving family and friends as an extremely kind, devoted and loving husband, brother, uncle, cousin and loyal friend .  Mr. Dalton grew up on Guilford Avenue in the Charles Village area of Baltimore City.  He attended SS. Philip & James Grade School and Church; Calvert Hall College High School,  Baltimore City College High School and Towson Community College.

Pursuing his career goal, Mr. Dalton attended the National Academy of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C.  His first radio job was in the late 1960's, broadcasting for WETT in Ocean City, MD.  He then joined WFMM in Baltimore, which was founded and owned by Julian Sinclair Smith.  In the early 1970's, Mr. Smith launched one of the first UHF television stations in Baltimore (WBFF-TV, Channel 45), a single TV station that eventually grew into today's Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc.  As one of the first news broadcasters in the early 1970's on Baltimore's Channel 45 WBFF-TV, Dalton served as news anchor for ten years prior to its affiliation with Fox. After meeting his wife in Bethesda in 1979, he subsequently joined the Voice of America, the international radio broadcaster of the US Department of State, located in Washington, D.C. retiring as an executive producer in 2004. He spent his fulfilling and inspiring years there in the English to Africa and Near East South Asia Divisions, meeting many notables from around the world presented by VOA to its worldwide audience. He had immeasurable appreciation for the dedicated and brave journalists in the countries served by VOA, as well as his home office colleagues. He continued to use his broadcasting expertise as a volunteer reader and director for Learning Ally, formerly Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. A Baltimore Ravens and Notre Dame teams stalwart supporter, he remained a lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles, often walking to a game with his father from their home close to the original stadium. Immensely proud of his State, he was active in Maryland Democratic political campaigns for Senators, governors and members of Congress and State and local legislators.

He traveled around the world with his wife, notably China, Italy, France, England , Ireland and Wales, reuniting with his father's family in the latter three. He joyfully joined his wife's school and internee reunions in the US and in HongKong, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Australia where they explored the Blue Mountains, walked around Uluru (Ayer's Rock) in the Red Desert and climbed the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

A fervent enthusiast of the performing arts, he and his wife attended innumerable plays, concerts, ballets, operas and solo performances, many of them at Washington, DC's Kennedy Center and on frequent trips to New York City. He most admired Stephen Sondheim and prized the occasion to see him at an 80th birthday celebration at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Mr. Dalton was a member of Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, and with his wife, members of Bethesda Jewish Congregation in Bethesda.

He was pre-deceased by his parents Andrew Michael Dalton and Mary Alma Dalton (nee Constantine).  He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Helen, to whom he happily joked he was joined at the hip; his beloved sister Mary Katherine Loane; sister-in-law Reva Jolovitz and her husband Herbert; nephew Paul Jolovitz and his wife Amy; niece Jenna Murphy and her husband Sean, and great-niece Dora Murphy. Also survived by cherished extended family and many devoted friends and loving cousins, locally and around the globe.

A private prayer service is being held in the home. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Michael Dalton are asked to be made to two causes that were meaningful to him: Chesapeake Bay Foundation (cbf.org) and University of Maryland Joseph D. Tydings Endowed Scholarship in Government, Policy, and Leadership (giving.umd.edu).
