March 2, 1926 – November 22, 2024
In Loving Memory of Dr. Neli Melman, M.D., Ph.D. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Neli Melman, a distinguished scientist, doctor, author, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who passed away on November 22nd at the age of 98.
Born in Kiev, Ukraine Dr. Melman dedicated her life to advancing science and uncovering stories of resilience. She served as a senior staff researcher at the Kiev Research Institute of Urology and Nephrology, where she co-authored 11 books, including textbooks and manuals, and contributed to over 150 published articles. Her groundbreaking work in the classification of chronic glomerulonephritis and renal failure shaped modern medical understanding.
Dr. Melman was committed to preserving the legacies of Jewish scientists whose careers were shaped by migration and resistance, particularly during the Holocaust. Her work in this area culminated in the book To Know and Remember, which explores anti-Semitism across historical periods. Her efforts have left an indelible mark on both science and history.
During World War II, Neli and her family were evacuated to Tajikistan, where they lived throughout the Nazi occupation. Tragically, several of her relatives, including her aunt, were among those killed in the Babi Yar massacre. This profound loss left an indelible mark on her life and underscored her dedication to preserving the memory of Holocaust victims through her work.
In 1989, Dr. Melman immigrated to the United States, continuing her career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her research in molecular biochemistry led to more than 30 influential scientific articles, earning her international respect.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Melman was deeply committed to her family. She was a loving mother to her daughter, Alla, and a cherished grandmother to her granddaughter, Olga. Her heart overflowed with joy and pride for her four great-grandsons Nick, Mikey, Sammy, and Benji whose laughter and accomplishments were constant sources of happiness in her life. She instilled in her family a deep respect for education, perseverance, and kindness.
A passionate chronicler of history, Dr. Melman published Medical Consequences of the Chernobyl Disaster in 2000 to raise awareness about the long-term impacts of the nuclear tragedy. She also contributed to the American Family Encyclopedia with an insightful chapter on kidney diseases.
Dr. Neli Melman will be remembered for her tireless dedication to research, her passion for uncovering truth, and her love and commitment to her family. She is survived by her daughter Alla and her husband Bill, her granddaughter Olga and her husband Pasha, and by her great grandsons Nick, Mikey, Sammy and Benji. A memorial service will be held on November 24th at 10:00 am at Judean Gardens in Olney.
