NELSON HOWARD SHAPIRO (Age 84)On Thursday, March 6, 2014, from cancer at home in Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of Gertrude "Trudy" Straher Shapiro for 61 years. Devoted father of Marcia (Paul) Jacques, Judith Shapiro Fitzgerald, and Richard (Katherine) Shapiro. Loving grandfather of Brandon Fitzgerald, Shannon Patrick, Daniel Patrick, David Shapiro, and Brian Shapiro. Great grandfather of Hailey and Layla Dodson. Preceded in death by his parents David and Dora Zarwitz Shapiro, and a sister Kathryn "Kitty" Shapiro Osborn, and is survived by his sister Jane Shapiro Ford. He was born in Baltimore, MD, on May 3, 1929. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953, he graduated in 1956 from the University of Baltimore with a degree in Accounting, and did graduate work at George Washington University from 1967-1968. He received his CPA Certificate in 1958. Mr. Shapiro had a very distinguished accounting career which included positions at George Mason University, General Automatic Products, Corp. in Baltimore, several federal government audit agencies; Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., and as a Partner and Director of the Government Contracting Services Group for Deloitte & Touche. During his tenure with the federal government, he also served as Executive Secretary to the Cost Accounting Standards Board (CASB). After his retirement in 1991, he consulted on various government contract issues, such as compliance with CASB Standards, indirect cost allocation, cost accounting systems, defective pricing, fraud and litigation support. He enjoyed family, travel, reading, horse racing, poker, time in Ocean City and stimulating conversations. There will be a celebration of life for family and friends on Saturday, March 15, from 1-5 p.m. at the home of Richard and Katherine Shapiro.
