Nelu, affectionately called Opa by his grandchildren, was born in Bucharest, Romania on October 14, 1929. He was a teenager during WWII and he and his immediate family were fortunate to survive the German occupation. Giselle & Nelu married on Feb 26, 1961, and were overjoyed to have 2 sons: Lucian ('64) and Sorin ('67). Even though the family lived a relatively decent life in Romania, his dream was to leave Communist Romania behind and emigrate to a county where they could live in freedom. In September, 1971 the Schwartz family arrived in Baltimore, MD and took up residence in Randallstown. Nelu spent the next 30 years working hard as a Professional Civil Engineer at Bechtel Corp and later at Development Consultants Group. When he wasn't working, Nelu enjoyed travel, beach vacations, skiing, reading, and entertaining friends & family at many social events.
Above all else, he loved his family, his many friends, and the game of Bridge. He was very proud of all his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow to be young adults and was fortunate enough to live long enough to meet his two great granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers or gifts memorial contributions may be made to HIAS ( https://hias.org ), an organization that provided our family with the support we needed when we immigrated to the United States.
