Dr. Olga Y. Printseva of Rockville, MD, died on April 9, 2024, of cancer at the age of 72. She was a distinguished scholar and scientist whose career in biological and medical research spanned five decades.
Olga was born in Leningrad, present-day St. Petersburg, Russia on January 14, 1952. She attended university in Leningrad before moving to Moscow where she received a Doctor of Sciences degree from Moscow State University in 1977. She subsequently became a senior research scientist in the U.S.S.R. Cardiology Research Center and, in 1987, the head of the laboratory of vascular cell biology at the Center. She was one of only a few women to hold such a prominent scientific position in the Soviet Union at that time.
After emigrating to the United States, Olga was granted American citizenship and worked for twenty years until her death as an expert consultant for the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. There, she led a team of researchers who worked on Medline, NLM's premier bibliographic database of biomedical literature and research.
The daughter of a playwright and an actress, Olga had a deep understanding of and appreciation for the arts, classical music and Russian literature.
A caring mother and devoted wife, Olga was deeply loved and is sorely missed.
