Obituary

Dr. Richard F. Brams of Gaithersburg, Maryland, passed away peacefully in his home, August 25, 2022, at age 94.

He is survived by his sons Jonathan (Kani) of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and Robert (Kimberley) of Bethesda, Maryland; grandchildren Lucy Solinsky (Jon), Samuel, Jacob, Garrett, Nathaniel, and Taylor; and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Claire.

Richard was born May 19, 1928, in Newark, New Jersey, the first of two children of Herman Brams and Blanche Urbach Brams. Richard earned a high school diploma from Weequahic High School in Newark, a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia.

While attending medical school, Richard met Renee Jacobs, and they married in 1955. After he graduated, the couple moved to Irvington, New Jersey, and then to Dover, Delaware, where he practiced medicine in the US Air Force. They then moved to the Wilmington, Delaware area, where they raised their sons.

After Richard practiced as a family doctor in a partnership in Wilmington for several years, he opened his own practice limited to allergy. Renee worked by his side as the practice's office manager from its opening in 1967 to their retirement in 1996.

After their retirement, Richard and Renee moved to Naples, Florida, where they lived year-round until 2010. They then moved to Maryland to be closer to their sons, first to North Bethesda, and, a few years later, to Gaithersburg.

Richard enjoyed reading, travel, movies and theater, sports, music, pets, and socializing with friends and family. He had many hobbies over the years, among them photography, gardening, baking, golfing, and painting. Above all, he treasured his love and companionship with Renee.

In 1989 Renee was disabled by Multiple Sclerosis. For the remaining three-plus decades of her life, she relied on a scooter for mobility and on Richard for practically everything else. Renee's reliance on Richard would increase as they grew older together, but he nevertheless remained dedicated to lovingly administering the care she needed, and he did so tirelessly and without complaint until she passed away in 2020.

Funeral arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider donating to Oligo Nation (www.oligonation.org). Richard's son Robert has a rare brain cancer known as an Oligodendroglioma.
