Richard Leroy Jones, Sr. passed away unexpectedly on Monday April 15, 2019 at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, MD. Richard "Ricky" Jones was born on August 16, 1955 to Phyllis Jones and William Jones in Baltimore where he grew up with his parents and siblings.
In October 2002, Richard formed a relationship with the love of his life Rosa Cross; later the two became one in marriage. Rosa was the calm in his time of pain, which he loved dearly until his very last breath. They enjoyed travelling to the Caribbean, going to theatres, trying new restaurants, and spending quiet evenings together. They cherished their time together and made sure to create everlasting memories.
Richard was the devoted father of three children, Steven, Dr. Richard Jr., and Derrick with his former wife Sheila Jones. He loved his sons with all of his heart. He stated time and time again, that they were the best things that he had done in his life. He was extremely proud of his sons' accomplishments. He took pride and was comforted in knowing that he raised men that were honorable, successful, and great fathers in their respective lives. Richard always greeted his sons on the phone and in person by saying, "My son, my son, my son, who I love dearly" and made sure to end his conversations by proclaiming, "I love you son."
Richard was a phenomenal man, always making time to spread his wisdom. He was always willing to provide advice or guidance to family, friends, and any anyone who needed it. He was extremely thoughtful, generous, caring, and selfless. He relished any opportunity to care for his family and friends. Growing up, he enjoyed taking his mother, grandmother, and aunt to the markets to help them shop. He always went above and beyond for those, whom he loved. Richard was a devoted Christian who was an active member of the church. He enjoyed playing basketball, playing chess, and baseball. He often attended Baltimore Orioles games with his wife and son Derrick. Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will always be remembered as a man of faith with an unwavering devotion to his family and friends.
Richard graduated from the University of Maryland College Park where he received a Bachelors of Science in Accounting. He took additional advanced classes at Townson State University in Baltimore. He later sat for the CPA exam and passed on the first try that is not something many people can do. Richard had a long and successful career as a Certified Public Accountant and Executive in the healthcare industry. He began his career at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD where eventually became a Financial Officer. Richard later became the Senior Vice President' Chief Financial Officer at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD. Richard served as Partner at global accounting firm, Ernest & Young, in Baltimore, MD. He later became the Senior Vice President' Chief Financial Officer at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, CT. His final role as a Senior Vice President' Chief Financial Officer was at Bon Secours Medical Systems in Baltimore, MD.
Richard was well respected, well known, and highly regarded as a healthcare Executive. He attained a level of knowledge and expertise that not many achieved. His dedication, hard work, and reputation resulted in him being appointed to many finance boards. Ricky served as the President of the Healthcare Finance Committee and President of the Maryland Healthcare Commission. He also became the first black President of the HFMA (Healthcare Financial Management Association). Richard served on the board of the Maryland Healthcare Organization and the board of Healthcare for Homeless. Ricky was devoted to being a change agent for healthcare reform in the State of Maryland. He was asked to speak and testify in front of the Maryland General Assembly at the State House in Annapolis on healthcare legislation on many occasions.
His mother, Phyllis Jones, his brothers Stanley Jones and Phillip Jones, precedes Richard in death. Richard is survived by his wife Rosa; his children Steven, Dr. Richard, Jr., and Derrick; daughter in laws Sharron and Danielle; step-children, Alberto Cross, Jason Cross, and Vanaika Cross; sisters Carolyn Jones, Harriette Jones, and Ernestine Holley-Jones; brother in law Ralph F. Jones; father William Jones; mother in law Margarita Anderson-Weedon; grandchildren Dominique, Monica, Antoine, Christian, and Ethan; step-grandchildren Kwest, Moziah, Bles'd, Nehemia, Kylie, Wyatt, Zyaire, Shiloh, Tavon, Seighaum, Kary, Jaden, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
