Obituary

Of Gaithersburg, Maryland. On Monday, August 31, 2015, Robert Sherman passed away. He graduated from the Theodore Roosevelt High School in June 1944. He enlisted in the United Sates Navy on June 7, 1944 and served on a P.T. boat in the South Pacific. Prior to ending his distinguished military career during WWII, Bob became a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps. He attended the University of Maryland and studied botany. He served the State of Maryland from 1971 to 2004 as a Deputy Sheriff with the Prince George's County Sheriff's Department. He was the longest serving deputy in the department's history. Following his retirement, he volunteered for the Montgomery County Fire, Rescue and EMS Service. His service and dedication earned him the Chief Leslie B. Thompson Community Service Award in 2013. Robert was a member of the VFW and a Brother of S. Gompers-B. Franklin No. 45 and was a Mason in good standings for more than 60 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Sherman (MD); children, Ellen Jewell (FL), Steven Sherman (FL) and Sandy McElhaney (VA); and grandchildren, Melissa Sherman (FL), Garret Jewell (FL), Ian McElhaney (VA) and Logan McElhaney (VA). He lived every day of his life by this motto: "I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." A Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2015 at The Danzansky Goldberg Chapel, 1170 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. Interment will follow at B'Nai Israel Congregation Cemetery, Oxon Hill, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's honor to the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area or Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
