Rosalind Feit, 91, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026. Roz was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 8,1934 to Morris and Sophie Zivotofsky. “Rozzie” was the eldest of four, and her siblings simultaneously adored and feared their book-smart and beautiful older sister. She graduated from Brooklyn's Jefferson High School in 1951 and Brooklyn College in 1953. A year later she married Jerry Feit, the NYU law school student who’d fallen head over heels in love with this gorgeous young woman he’d first seen reading on her stoop on Malta St. in East New York, the Brooklyn neighborhood where they both grew up.
Leaving Brooklyn behind, the young couple moved in 1956 to Washington, DC, where Roz immediately began a long career as an elementary school teacher. Her first years teaching in D.C. were marked by her allegiance with the school’s principal, Mr. Jett, with whom she sided on civil rights and student civil liberties.
Equally committed to her love of reading and learning, Roz worked until the late 1990s at Meadow Hall Elementary School in Rockville, Maryland where she established herself as an invaluable, star teacher. In addition to working in the classroom, she helped introduce the extracurricular “Great Books” program into the Montgomery County Public Schools system.
She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. Roz and Jerry were inseparable and unabashedly in love. They remained giddy and married for 70 years until Jerry’s death in 2024. She was also a long-suffering theater, basketball, and high school rock-band mom, and a doting grandparent.
Roz was notably fashionable, with a particular dedication to the latest nail polish. She was also intimidating, by some accounts, thanks to her sly wit and high standards. She remained an avid reader all her life and could regularly be found lost in a book on the couch after dinner or in her favorite spot, reading at the neighborhood pool. Otherwise, you could reliably find Roz kibitzing and laughing with Jerry.
Roz was preceded in death by her husband Jerry. She is survived by her brother Bernie; her sister Judi; and her brother Jackie; her sons Adam and Josh; her daughter-in-law Krista; and her grandchildren Cory and Natalie. A graveside funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 at Garden of Remembrance, 14321 Comus Rd., Clarksburg, MD 20871. Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzasky Goldberg Funeral Care.
