IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruth Nuchow
Bukatman
October 12, 1938 – August 8, 2021
Ruth Nuchow Bukatman (daughter of Jack Nuchow and Rose LaBarbara Nuchow) was born in Manhattan, NY on October 12, 1938. She beat her twin brother Richard (Richie) into this world by 6 minutes. Ruth and Richie joined older sister Barbara. A piano prodigy, Ruth played Carnegie Hall twice as a teen. She graduated from high school at 15, and graduated from Hunter College. At the ripe old age of 20, she met a young medical student and they were married in June 1959. Children Dorothy, Mark and Julie soon followed. For 23 years, Ruth was the bold, dedicated principal of Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore City. Ruth grew the school to become a performing and visual arts magnet, and created strong partnerships with local churches and elected officials; the Baltimore Ravens; Teach for America; and accomplished artists, among many others. Ruth was dedicated to the lives of her students, teachers, and everyone affiliated with Booker T. In her rare spare time, Ruth enjoyed spending time with her beloved family; creating beautiful needlework; tennis; Mah Jong; book club; continuing education; and taking part in lively and entertaining discussions. Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved son, Mark, and by her sister Barbara (Hank) Friedberg. Ruth is survived by daughters Dorothy (John) and Julie (Michael), brother Richard (Gina), and grandchildren Rachel (Stephen), Grace, and David. The family wishes to extend its profound thanks to Dr. Justin Sacks and Dr. Ira Fine. Donations in Ruth's memory can be made to: Ira T. Fine Discovery Fund.
