IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sheldon
Rabinovitz
September 2, 1944 – September 24, 2024
With tremendous sadness and heartache, the family of Sheldon Rabinovitz, known to all as Sheldon, is sharing the news of his passing away on September 24, 2024, at his home in North Potomac, Maryland at 80 years young.
He will be so very missed by so many, notably his wife of 53 years, Marcia Rabinovitz; his three children, Brian Rabinovitz (wife Mary Schor), Jeff Rabinovitz (partner Keeley Ellakany), and Lauren Rabinovitz (husband John Szeglin); granddaughter Madeline Szeglin; sister Florence Cohen (late husband Sydney Cohen); brother Steven Rabinovitz (wife Susan Rabinovitz); sister/brothers-in-law Harlan and Nancy Rossman and Michael Shechter, among many other cousins, neighbors and countless friends and colleagues.
Sheldon has left an indelible impact on every person and animal lucky enough to be in his orbit. Sheldon was brilliant, kind, irreverent, funny, and hard working. He took care of everyone, asking for nothing in return.
His industrious career in environmental science spanned over 50 years. He earned his PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology in 1972 and was running his own business until the day he passed. He contributed to important legislation supporting the health and safety of American workers.
Throughout Sheldon's career he was involved in developing, implementing and preparing industrial hygiene and safety programs for multiple government agencies.
All who worked with Sheldon on a professional basis respected him for his knowledge, intelligence, and enthusiasm. All appreciated Sheldon professionally and personally, felt he was very generous with his time, and an overall great man whom most considered a friend.
While Sheldon has a lot to be proud of career wise, he wouldn't hesitate to say his greatest accomplishment was his children. And the bond he had with his granddaughter is one impossible to sum in words and can only be understood by the joy in their faces when together. He always loved children because he claimed "to be a big kid." Yet he managed to make everyone feel safe and protected. He helped neighbors, extended family and anyone in need.
He loved talking and debating with his friends, exercising, working on cars (successfully), fixing anything broken around the house (usually successfully), and making interesting concoctions in the kitchen (successful only in his mind). He especially loved saving money and went to comical efforts to do so. In many ways, he was a very simple person - he believed in respecting everyone and being true to his core values.
He had a lifelong love and passion for cars starting with his time working for The Ford Motor Company in the 1970's. He enjoyed going to dealerships to check out the newest in car technology and was so excited to get a fully electric car last year. There was no car repair he wouldn't take on and kept records in his infamous "log book." He could often be found in the garage under the hood of a car (assisted by his custom car lift) and joked about opening "Rabinovitz Automotive."
"He went out of his way to help and lift up many others---he was simply one of the kindest and most generous persons I have known. It was one of the great strokes of luck in my life--and I'm sure I'm not alone--- to have met Sheldon Rabinovitz, and to have been able to call him my best friend." Roy Stein, friend for 60 years
"Whether it was to ask a quick question about tire pressure or when I got a job offer, my first call was always to my dad. He was there for every moment of my life, from the major to the seemingly insignificant. I will miss him as I loved him: fiercely." Lauren Rabinovitz, daughter
