Dr. Stanley C. Marinoff of Chevy Chase, Maryland passed away on September 16, 2023. He was a devoted father of Allison (Eric) Carle, sibling of Helene Rubenstein and Martin Marinoff and he is survived by his two loving grandsons Sam and Jacob.
Dr. Marinoff was a distinguished, forward-thinking obstetrician gynecologist who brought countless lives into the world, mentored many fellow physicians, and made significant contributions to the field of women's health, particularly in his work with vulvodynia.
Dr. Marinoff was born in Philadelphia in 1937, graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia, completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and acquired his medical training at Chicago Medical School in 1962.
Dr. Marinoff pursued his postgraduate residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and served as Chief Resident from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Marinoff was stationed in Japan from 1967 to 1969 and served as a Captain at the USAF Hospital.
Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Marinoff earned the degree of Masters in Public Health at Harvard University. In 1970, Dr. Marinoff was appointed the Director of the Division of Population Studies in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Ambulatory Care at Mount Sinai Hospital. He served in these positions until 1973 when he was selected to be Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the newly formed Group Health Association of Washington, DC which brought him, his late wife Shirley and only child Allison to the Washington, DC area and they settled in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
After leaving the Group Heath Association, Dr. Marinoff started a decades long private practice. In addition to his practice, he held an appointment as Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The George Washington University Medical Center and was later a Professor Emeritus and was very active in several professional organizations.
Later in his career, Dr. Marinoff became an internationally recognized as an authority on the diagnosis and treatment of vulvar disease, and he also founded the Center for Vulvovaginal Disorders. Dr. Marinoff's expertise and teaching skills were crucial in the training of medical students and residents.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was also a steadfast supporter of the arts, education, and theater, leaving a mark through his generosity including a legacy gift to name a theater after himself and his late wife at the Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virgina. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Contemporary American Theater Festival for almost a decade and continued his service on the Honorary Board to his death.
