Obituary

Stephen J. Horwitz, M.D., passed away peacefully at home in Urbana, Maryland, on June 14, 2026, at the age of 76, with his beloved wife, Emily, and children, Lauren and Benjamin, by his side.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 10, 1950, Steve graduated from Pikesville High School in 1968 before earning his undergraduate degree from George Washington University in 1972 and his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1976. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University Hospital in 1980.

Steve devoted more than four decades to the practice of medicine. In 1982, he co-founded an OB/GYN practice in Washington, D.C., which grew to become the largest private OB/GYN practice in the region. Throughout his distinguished career, he held numerous leadership positions, including President of the Kane King OB/GYN Society, Chief of Gynecology at Columbia Hospital for Women, Chair of Gynecology at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and member of the Board of Directors of Capital Women’s Group. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Health Resource Center and co-authored The Book of Women’s Health in 1999.

Steve loved caring for his patients and was deeply honored to be part of their lives. The countless letters, cards, photographs, and messages he received over the years reflected the lasting impact he made on generations of women and families throughout the Washington area.

In 1978, a high school reunion led to a blind date with Emily, the woman who would become the love of his life. They married in 1979 and shared 47 years of love, friendship, laughter, and mutual respect.

Above all else, Steve was devoted to his family. He was a proud father to Lauren and Benjamin and an exceptionally involved grandfather to Ava, Riley, and Braden. Whether helping with homework, attending sporting events, playing chess and card games, building with Legos, or planning family vacations, Steve cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved. Family was always his greatest joy and highest priority.

Even when faced with health challenges in recent years, Steve maintained his kindness, resilience, and trademark sense of humor. He will be remembered for his intelligence, compassion, dedication to his patients, and unwavering love for his family.

The lives he touched as a physician, husband, father, grandfather, and friend will forever be better for having known him.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Emily; his daughter, Lauren, and son-in-law, Alan; his son, Benjamin, and daughter-in-law, Jackie; his cherished grandchildren, Ava, Riley, and Braden; and his devoted sister-in-law, Deborah, and her children, Andrea and Jason, all of whom brought great joy to his life.

The family will be observing Shiva Thursday June 18, 2026, following burial until 6pm at the Horwitz Residence and Friday June 19, 2026, from 1-7pm at Lauren and Alan Woods residence.
